The J.B. Player brand was created by Dana Zacuto (whose brother founded Mighty Mite guitars) around 1985.[1] In 1989, it was bought out by by MBT International (later Musicorp, Inc.). The original lineup from the late '80s to early '90s featured mostly superstrat models that were made by Cort. By at least 1994, Samick began building the "JBP Artist" line. In 2005, J.B. Player replaced Hondo after they were bought by Musicorp in 1995.
